The number of break in attempts via ssh is just exploding. My FreeBSD system has wonderful system and security emails each day and this morning it reported more than 2000 break attempts via ssh. This particular attack was hitting pretty hard, with several attempts happening every second for more than 25 minutes. I’ve had attempts like this before, but they weren’t as fast and didn’t last as long, usually only a few hundred attempts lasting less than 10 minutes.
Will there ever be a time when being on the Internet will be less dangerous than it was the year before? It isn’t looking that way.
