“Is It More Important Than Reader?”
That is the question that immediately came to mind when I saw the announcement for Google Keep. If the concern was focusing more resources on few products, this seems to go the opposite direction.
Then there is the lost of trust issue with keeping a service around. Om Malik described his thoughts on Google Keep this way:
It might actually be good, or even better than Evernote. But I still won’t use Keep. You know why? Google Reader.
For each new Google product announcement I’m going to be wondering, is it more important than Google Reader?

Even worse, for each product without a very clear financial/business incentive for Google, I’ll wonder how much time they’ll be willing to support it.
I don’t think that is a new situation. My understanding is that they’ve always leveraged large profits in a few areas to subsidize making nearly everything else free.
My sentiments exactly. I have a hard time trusting them anymore.
Trust is one of those intangible items that don’t get reflected in budget analysis or project reviews. Hard to win, easily to loose.
That said, I think if Google learns from this and does a better job in the future then I think eventually people (myself included) will gradually start to trust them again.
