The Facial Pattern Recognition Powers Of A Two Year Old

Teaching Alice the names of the US States was so fun that we thought we’d try US Presidents next. So Sarah bought a plastic place matt that had all of the Presidents on one side (photo, years served, etc) and interesting facts about each one on the other. We’ve only gone through it a few times so she isn’t as familiar with them as the States (she can pick out probably more than 50% of the States by herself and knows the names of most of them, not bad for a two year old), but its a start. That was about a month ago. Fast forward to the last week or so. I was getting Alice set up for breakfast, she insisted on having her Presidents place matt instead of the States one. No problem, I was happy to oblige. I pointed out a couple of the Presidents to her, Washington, Lincoln, etc. She then did something that caught me off guard, pointing to JFK she said “that’s daddy”. Very funny, but I explained that the person whose picture that was is JFK. In a more determined tone, “that is daddy!”. Not wanting to my daughter to thing that her dad was the thirty-fifth president for the rest of her life I gently explained that the mans name was JFK. Almost screaming at me, pounding on JFK’s picture, “THAT IS DADDY!”. At that point I tried not to laugh while she was watching and said, yes, that was daddy.

I had considered putting up a picture of myself and JFK in this post so that you could see for yourself. I’m going to save you the trouble though, I don’t look anything like JFK. I suspect that since he was the youngest president, 43 I think, and I’m 31 that it was the best match she could find. Either way it made for a darn funny morning at the breakfast table as my daughter is now 100% sure that I am JFK 🙂
