This weekend is the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a time where leaders of the church speak to the church as a whole. As I listen to the speakers it is a time for me to reflect on how I can improve myself.
What has come to my mind is the story of Jesus and a lawyer discussing “who is my neighbour?” in Luke 10:25-37. Jesus described an injured man left “half dead” and three people who came across him. Only the third stopped to help, making the point that the neighbor of the injured man was “He that shewed mercy on him”. This is commonly referred to as the Parable of the Good Samaritan.
Beyond traditional neighbors, re-reading this well known New Testament story reminds me that I also have neighbors of opportunity. I feel like I need find more ways to show mercy to my neighbors of opportunity.
