The Network Is My Memory

It seems that more and more I rely on secondary storage to remember things. I was joking with someone at work this morning that my brain probably only holds 8% of what I “remember”. A good 40% is purely in general search engines like Google and Yahoo!. Another 25% in bookmarks (either in a web browser or via my del.icio.us bookmarks) and blog entries. The remaining 27% goes to email, since I keep pretty much everything that I send or receive.

I don’t really “know” that much, but I can usually find it via Google, my bookmarks/blog or in my email. I think this probably applies mostly to work and technical items. Thankfully I remember more that just 8% of my address and phone number, usually.
